Marjaraasana - For Sound Physical And Mental Health

Sunday, 30 August 2009

Yoga today is all the rage. It is a subject that excites people’s curiosity and enjoys much popularity. This is especially so since the asanas (exercises) and pranayamas (breathing techniques) that owe their origins to ancient Indian wisdom have proved beneficial in promoting holistic health and mental peace as also in developing personality. In this article we will discuss Marjaraasana - the cat pose.

Process: Sit on your haunches with the knees and toes on the ground. Keep the palms on the floor in such a way that the distance between them is about the same as that between the shoulders
i.e. equal to the width of the back. Keep the distance between the palms and the knees about the same as that between the shoulders and the hips
i.e. equal to the length of the torso. The distance between the knees should be the same as the width of the waist. Turn the toes back so that the soles face upward. The distance between the soles should be the same as that between the knees. Relax the muscles in the trunk region and let the trunk descend under gravity. At the same time
let the neck and head curve backward as far as possible. Relax the stomach and close the eyes. Direct your attention to the entire body and practise conscious differential relaxation. Keep the mind engaged in pranadharana (consciousness of breath). This is the final posture of marjaraasana –maintain it according to capacity.

An extension of the above posture can be attained in the following manner: staying in the final posture obtained above
open your eyes. Move the palms about 10-15 cms towards the knees. Curve the back upwards so that it shapes like an arch. Relax the neck and hang the head down. Draw the chin towards the chest and relax the abdomen
practice differential relaxation and then do prandharana. This is the final extension posture of marjaraasana- maintain it according to capacity.

Releasing the asana: Start by lowering the right leg by bending it at the knee
then rest the knee on the floor. Lower the head and make the back parallel to the ground
loosen it up and relax.

Benefits: The spine becomes flexible and supple; it helps to correct the functional defects of the back and spine. The health of the organs in the torso improves. You are relieved of backache and pain in the neck resulting from exertion. It also soothes the neck muscles and the lumbar region of the spine and invigorates the spinal nerves
improves blood circulation in the abdominal region thereby making digestive
respiratory and excretory processes. This asana is also useful in treating respiratory disorders.

Warning: The reader of this article should exercise all precautions before following any of the asanas from this article and the site. To avoid any problems while doing the asanas
it is advised that you consult a doctor and a yoga instructor. The responsibility lies solely with the reader and not with the site or the writer.

Learning About Hatha Yoga

Saturday, 22 August 2009

Yoga has become one of the most popular types of alternative medical treatments and its popularity is growing rapidly every year.

Hatha yoga is only one of many "types" of yoga that exists today.

Yoga was originally meant to be a spiritual treatment of the mind and the soul.

It has
in today’s world
become more of a physical treatment than anything else.

Hatha yoga is the type of yoga that prepares your body for its spiritual journey. This is mainly done with physical and breathing exercises as well as asceticism. This type of yoga requires the most physical exercise than any of the other types of yoga.

A few of the main factors for Hatha yoga are concentration on your breathing and your posture. This type of concentration can be more difficult than you think. Once you try this for yourself and see what this type of concentration can do
you will want to continue with this type of yoga. The purpose of practicing a great posture is to practice great meditation. You need to find a position that you can sit in for a long period of time. If you cannot be comfortable in your meditation and yoga positions
then you will be unsuccessful. The more postures and positions that you can acquire
a better meditative state will result.

Hatha is the form of yoga that anyone should begin with. Hatha begins with the basics of yoga and teaches you the inner workings of meditation and how you should begin. Once you master your own postures and positions of meditation comfort
it is time to master your breathing patterns. If you can master your own breathing patterns
than mastering your mind is not far out of reach for you. It takes many steps to reach these different levels of meditation and yoga. With practice and concentration anyone can do it.

If you are beginning your new adventure with yoga
Hatha is the form of yoga that you should begin with. If you want your yoga career to be successful you must begin with the proper steps and then learn in the right order. If you only learn the superficial methods of yoga
then you will not experience the desired results from this amazing technique of holistic meditation.

In today’s world
Hatha yoga mostly used for its physical exercise. We do not take advantage of the other benefits that Hatha yoga can give to us. It is a form of yoga that if done properly
can heal you in the most holistic way possible. Hatha yoga does evolve from its physical exercises. It is these exercises that begin and promote the mind and soul healing. No matter why you are participating in yoga
you can receive all of these benefits. The only way you can recognize them or use them to your benefit is to practice the other side of yoga
meditation. If you are unaware that these features
they will be of no use to you. When practicing yoga
you need to be aware of everything going on within you. Pay attention to yourself and you will instantly be able to see the changes that are going on within you.

Hatha yoga can be easy to learn if you are open minded and want to learn. It is a technique that can be mastered if you put all your energy and concentration into it. By learning the techniques of Hatha yoga
you are well on your way to an alternative way of healing in the most holistic way possible.

Learn Yoga s Relaxation Technique A long lost art for rejuvenation

We all know that one of the necessary things needed to keep an automobile in good condition is cooling the engine when it gets hot.

Well the same principle applies to the human body. When the body and mind are constantly overworked
their efficiency in performing their duties diminishes. Modern social life
food
work and even play make it difficult for the modern man to use a proper relaxation technique for rejuvenation.

An observance of nature will show us that animals love relaxation and sleep. They get as much sleep as they want. Rest and sleep are essential to recharge our nervous energy
as our physical
emotional and mental balance depends on the quantity and quality of these vital necessities. They are the only things that recharge these batteries and allow for the proper elimination of metabolic wastes.

But just how can one learn a proper relaxation technique?

Only the corpse pose offered to us in Yoga can aid modern man to recapture the art of relaxation. In order to achieve this
three methods are used by the yogis. The three methods are known as physical
mental and spiritual relaxation.

Physical Relaxation Technique: We all know that every action is the result of thought originated in the mind consciously or subconsciously. When we want to perform an act
the thought is generated in the mind
is transmitted to the brain and simultaneously
the brain telegraphs the message through the nerves
and the muscles contract. Therefore as we can send messages to make the muscles contract
we can send messages to make them relax.

This relaxation technique is known as autosuggestion. Commence autosuggestions from the toes upwards while the suggestion passes through the muscles and reaches up to the eyes and ears at the top. This is performed by saying mentally to yourself: “My toes are hereby relaxed; my ankles are hereby relaxed…”

Mental Relaxation Technique: During mental tension one should breathe slowly and rhythmically for a few minutes and concentrate on breathing. Slowly the mind will become calm and one is able to feel a kind of floating sensation.

Spiritual Relaxation Technique: However one tries to relax the mind
one cannot completely remove all tensions and worries from it unless one goes to spiritual relaxation.
This is in itself is a slightly demanding but very rewarding practice.

Yogis know that unless man can withdraw himself from the body idea and separate himself from the ego consciousness
there is no way of obtaining complete relaxation. So from mental relaxation
he withdraws himself and identifies himself with the all pervading
all powerful
all peaceful and joyful self
because all the source of power
knowledge are in the soul and not the body. Man can only free himself from the clutches of evil emotions by asserting his true self by stating mentally: "I am that pure consciousness or self" This identification with the self completes the process of relaxation.

The method to be applied here is to breathe deeply and squarely in a ratio of 5:5:5 seconds while mentally chanting the mantra above. As you will observe it goes hand-in-hand with mental relaxation after the physical auto suggestions are completed.

To get the most of this practice
you should practice this after your poses
before going to sleep or even during a break or recess at work or school
or right at your desk.

I always tell people: “Hey if it is said God took a break on the 7th day after making the world
who are we as humans not to take time out to relax?” So to recharge your energy and restore you physical
mental and emotional balance and strength
apply the methods above to learn how to relax the proper way.

Kriya Yoga And The Nature Of The Journey

Thursday, 20 August 2009

Kriya yoga has found a place in some people who are looking for a deeper
more spiritual relationship with their lives. It is a kundalini oriented yoga and meditation technique
that also teaches certain spiritual and esoteric principles. Unfortunately
like many similar "spiritual" power structures
it teaches you that essentially your power lies outside of yourself - that is
that you need a 'guru'
or 'master' to access your own innate spirituality.

Kriya yoga has some aims which sound both appealing and promising. They aim to eliminate "obstructions" and "obstacles" from the mind and body. Point of view is a very interesting thing here
however. Because what is an obstacle or obstruction to one person
may not be to another. This assumes a very interesting light in reference to power structures and belief systems
and highlights why it is important to maintain your own self sovereignty in mind and action.

Kriya yoga was brought to the West by Yogananda in the 1920's. He established the Self-Realization Fellowship as a 'total yoga' system that tried to address spiritual as well as physical aspects of self.

Kriya yoga is derived mainly from three other yoga techniques - karma yoga
bhakti yoga
and Jnana yoga. Karma yoga focuses on the movement of the soul both inside and outside of the mind. Jnana yoga focuses on wisdom
allowing the mind freedom. Bhakti yoga focuses on love
as it allows you to come to terms with everything around you. The aim in combining them was to "purify" the mind and soul
and proponents of kriya yoga believe they can achieve self realization more quickly this way than following the other disciplines.

Kriya Preparation

The first step in Kriya is to 'prepare' your body
and that is done in one of a couple of ways. For many
Hatha yoga is the perfect preparation exercise. For others
though
who may not be as flexible
alternatives are provided.

Next in Kriya
the mind is prepared. General conduct is studied as part of the mental process in this discipline
so ensuring your mind is correctly focused is essential. Additionally
the Kriya yoga technique pushes you to study overall wellness
cleanliness
purity
and even metaphysical principles. Together
though
they help to 'prepare' the mind for later techniques
which use the body's life force currents ostensibly to "refine" the brain and nervous system.

Mantras are taught in kriya yoga techniques. They are believed to deepen the meditative experience. This sound technology undoubtably tunes the body
like a tuning fork
as will any sound that is repeated and focused on. The question is
of course
to what frequency is the body being tuned?

If self realization is a journey
whose journey are we undertaking? Ours
or someone else's? Kriya yoga undoubtably resonates with some people. For myself
I prefer more transparency.

Kriya Yoga - Learn The Secrets To Kriya Yoga

Kriya Yoga is a process of mental purification that teaches meditation through techniques.

The fundamental belief of Kriya Yoga is that all of us are miniature version of the whole cosmos
a microcosm or an evolution of a new world within the microcosmic world.

The followers of Kriya yoga also believes that the most holy supreme creator is a part of us hiding beneath our body
and activating every action through the breath.

The name Kriya is meant as any work “kri” is being done by the power of the indwelling soul “ya”.

The different cosmic forces controlling
air
fire
water and earth also controls the different activities that we do
namely
religious activities
relationship with everyone and everything
food
pregnancy
and everything performed by the human body.

Yoga on the other hand is the conjoining of these correspondences between microcosms and macrocosms. It is the full acceptance and belief behind the union and interaction of the individual self and the supreme self.

The study and science of Kriya yoga has a divine origin and was not created by human means and intellect.

The modernization for this ancient yoga meditation method has begun in the 1860’s with Babaji and has been handed down to the present Kriya yoga lineage of masters directly through the Master to disciple method of teaching.

The disciplined path of Kriya Yoga consists of many different kinds of teaching with different angles to it. One looks at it as a process of beginning with self introspection through breathing controls.

It is also believed in Kriya yoga that that by enlightening the three qualities of light
vibration and sound simultaneously with proper concentration
posture and breathing through application of a series of techniques
a Kriya yoga disciple is able to penetrate the deepest levels of the unconscious mind.

Through this they can communicate with their inner gods and obtain a fulfilling calmness within them.

Kripalu Yoga Joining Forces

Intertwining the mind
body
and energy is the primary goal of Kripalu yoga. Those who practice it believe that the body contains energy pulsations in a flow that are called prana
which is sometimes referred to as life force. The idea is that the smallest thought or worry can cause problems with the prana in your physical body. That is why Kripalu is important; it is a way of being aware of the prana and using breathing with thought to prevent blockage or disturbance of the life force in your body. In turn
you will feel an increased level of mental clarity and emotional control.

Boiled down to its essence
Kripalu yoga is about looking at yourself in order to free you. Kripallu yoga followers believe that by simply examining and experiencing physical
emotional
and mental processes
you begin to erase blockages in the prana. In turn
this creates a better flow of life force inside you and invokes a feeling of physical and mental well-being.

Why Kripalu?

Yoga
in all its forms
has been shown to be highly effective in honing the physical human body. This is much of the reason for yoga’s immense popularity. What Kripalu does
though
is use the physical body and yoga’s benefits to it as a vehicle for pursuing the greater good of mental and emotional stability and clarity. Hence
many believe it to be the most complete and beneficial form of yoga. The idea is that as you release your emotional and mental impurity
you increase the amount of prana in your system which in turn also helps with physical healing and performance. Of course
when all yoga practices and meditation are prefaced with techniques
such as the Maharic Seal (Azurite Press)
that seal the body's energy fields from external influences
the experience of self knowledge is both clearer and authentic. Kripalu yoga does not teach this
however.

Many use this popular form of yoga to combine physical fitness with self growth and the empowerment of the self. In Kripalu
you will learn to lead yourself through self-examination rather than through a leader or instructor. In this form of yoga
leadership is there only to help you turn yourself into your own leader. Your sensitivity to self
others
and your own body will increase from the focus you will receive when you look inside. To take it deeper
many believe that you are using your body to as a temple to attract the presence of those powers greater than yourself. Though some may be skeptical
many more feel such presences when led there through their own self-examination.

When you learn Kripalu from an instructor
you will find that it usually does not matter what your level is in yoga. The classes are generally conducted in the same way for new yoga practitioners and veterans alike. The emphasis
remember
is on looking inside yourself and seeing what is there. Though there are postures and a “right” way to do them
you will likely be encouraged to concentrate on your mental state and on increasing the flow of your prana.

Moreover
Kripalu is truly about life change. You will learn to focus on your spiritual well being outside of the classroom as well as while you're on the yoga mat
contributing to your overall well being and helping you on your way to being the best person you can be.

Kripalu is a unique form of yoga. With emphasis on looking at the self and ridding it of all that has gone awry
this form of yoga is about more than just fitness of the body. It is about fitness of emotions
spirit
and even a little bit of the soul.

Karma Yoga The Art Of Living

The ancient book of Gita
which is the treatise on the living has led a great stress on the karma. Karma is defined as the action and its fruits. Ancient Hindu saints have believed that a man’s life is the direct result of his karma. Good thoughts
words and deeds lead to good and happy life while bad thoughts
words and deeds lead a person to disaster. This has been postulated in the 18th century by Isaac Newton
who gave his law as “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

The branch of yoga that deals with karma is called as the karma yoga. Usually you are bound by the cravings and desires associated with your act but you can free yourself by doing the act but dissociating yourself from its consequences. This is the basic concept behind karma yoga and the person who follows this path is known as karma yogi. His behaviour is of indifference and while the world may think he is not interested
in reality he has mastered his desires and has developed awareness of the real significance of the events that occur around him.

This yoga involves doing your duty without any reservations but is free of the cravings of the results that are obtained from the act. This attitude is difficult to acquire because we are taught to hanker after the fruits of our labour and any failure to obtain the desired results leads you to frustration and negative thinking. Also
constant attachment to the results leads you to stress
competition and aggressiveness. This has led to increased incidences of stress
diabetes
depression
heart ailments and suicides and has led many youngsters to use drugs
alcohol and cigarettes. Hence following the teaching of Krishna in Gita
wherein he advises Arjun: “You are entitled to an action but not its fruits” will lead you to a happy and stress free life.

A karma yogi realizes this and hence he follows the path of detachment. But this does not make him dull or inefficient. On the contrary
he channelizes his entire energy into the tasks at hand with complete vigour as his energy is not dissipated and gives it a best shot. Hence the results of his actions are the best and he gets good fruits. He does not run after pleasure but pleasure follows him. This makes him a pleasant person to be around and thus enjoys success in his life.

Jnana Yoga Yoga For The Intelligent

Jnana means the knowledge. This yoga is the yoga for the intelligent and selected people. This yoga is the ultimate goal of all the other varieties of yoga. This yoga teaches you to look at the world as it is without any ignorance and bias. You can achieve this state by practicing rigorous mental discipline and virtue. This yoga is also called Raja Yoga or the king of all the yogas
since it is of the highest variety and rules over all the other varieties. This is the Yoga that Patanjali has described in his Yoga Sutras.

This yoga is made up of eight parts of which five are external and the other three are internal. Two of its parts
viz yama and niyama deal with types of behaviour that the student of yoga should avoid like lying
cheating
stealing etc. and those behaviours that he should cultivate like cleanliness
non-collection etc. Asanas and Pranayama are the next two parts of this yoga. Asanas are the physical movements that help in developing the suppleness of the body and thus cure any diseases. You can control your breath by using pranayama which increases the capacity of the lungs to take in air and thus increases the vitality of the body. The next part Pratyahara denotes the withdrawal of the sense organs from objects of enjoyment. The remaining three parts deal with intense mental concentration.

Patanjali maintained that practicing these eight parts of yoga faithfully and intensely will
over a period of time
erase all the impurities of the body and mind and thus attain knowledge that will liberate the person from bondage and ignorance. This yoga is called Ashtanga Yoga since it is made of eight parts. It is also called as Dhyana yoga due to its stress on mental concentration. Hence
whenever there is any mention of yoga
it is usually implied that the person is talking about Jnana Yoga

Isn t It Time To Try Kundalini Yoga

Although there are many types of yoga
and it may be impractical to try them all
experiencing some of the main branches -- including Kundalini yoga -- will give you a fuller grasp of yoga’s essence and benefits. Kundalini yoga isn't just another practice
however. It's often referred to as the mother of all yoga
and said to be one of the most powerful forms.

What's more
Kundalini yoga is a little different from other practices. Most forms of yoga concentrate on the body's poses
combined with breathing and meditation exercises. While Kundalini yoga still concerns itself with forms and poses
it places much more emphasis on breathing
chanting
and releasing a special energy we all possess unawares.

In Kundalini yoga
the special energy is likened to a powerful serpent lying asleep at the base of the spine. But practitioners can awaken the powerful serpent with the use of Kundalini techniques
releasing almost unimaginable energy.

How It’s Done

In Kundalini yoga
you'll combine classic poses
meditation
chanting or mantras
and also coordinate your breath and movement. In this yoga
the serpent that represents energy is said to lie asleep at the base of your spine
coiled and dormant. Specifically
this region is located in the perineum area of the body. That is
it lies between the rectum and the testicles in males
and between the vagina and the clitoris in females. When awakened
the dormant masculine energy (Siva) and feminine energy (Sakti) unite to create a powerful surge unlike anything you're likely to have experienced before.

What Can It Do For Me?

The powerful energy released by Kundalini yoga is said to do many things for the body. And yet
although it can help you physically
its primary benefits are spiritual. All the intangible energies that help to shape our lives are affected by Kundalini yoga
such as divine prosperity
and freedom from judgment. Once freed

Indian Gurus and unsafe yoga camp

Yoga - the oldest system of personal development needs no introduction nowadays. Its popularity can be estimated by the fact that more than 15 million people practice yoga in USA alone. Almost every health club in a country like UK has yoga classes. In India where the yoga system was originated it was not practiced on mass level until couple of years ago. Of course
yoga was taught as a free service for years by organization like Bhartiya Yog Sansthan in public park but never before as an unquestionable and unsafe mass hysteria.

Recently with the help of TV channels the whole concept of Yoga has rejuvenated in India. Baba Ramdev Ji
the Indian ‘yoga guru’ has started teaching yoga to the masses to the extent of millions of people.

It is really good that now people in India are developing healthy habits by waking up early in the morning followed by energizing yoga practice
thanks to TV channels and Baba Ramdev. As Yoga exercises have tremendous physical and medical benefits which help people to get rid of various diseases
it is good that those TV channels and Baba Ramdev and others are doing marvelous work to help the nation to get rid of diseases.

However
like every other science
yoga is also a precise science. The question is: ‘Are all yoga exercises safe to teach through the TV media and can the same exercise be taught to all people with various health conditions?’
“This is the question which requires deeper digging into the subject of yoga itself otherwise the consequences of doing yoga practice could be more dangerous than beneficial” said Subodh Gupta
Yoga expert from India.

Let us understand how:
There are some breathing exercises like simple alternate nostril breathing (without holding the breath)
which can be taught easily without much complications and have various benefits. However
at the same time some of the exercises
for example: kapalabhati breathing technique which is taught to the masses is quite questionable. “This exercise even though having tremendous benefits
can be equally dangerous if somebody has heart disease or problem related to hernia” said Subodh. ‘Will it help or rather make the hernia and heart problem worse?’ considering the fact that many Indians suffer from hernia and heart problem. For example
according to the ‘National Digestive Disease Information Clearinghouse’ (NDDIC)
potential causes for hernia include anything that creates increased pressure in the abdomen. This includes: coughing
vomiting
straining/constipation
etc. Now considering this information what about the forceful exhalation which people do while practicing kapalabhati or other pranayama exercises and how far these can be dangerous for people having hernia? Perhaps medical expert can better answer this question in more details.

Similarly there are number of other yoga postures which require great precautions. As we all have different body structures and different fitness level
conducting same exercises (apart from very few which are comparatively safe) for 30000 people in a camp without checking their medical conditions is quite questionable.

Also ‘Are the instructions about kapalabhati and other yoga exercises safely delivered by Gurus?’ ‘Are they ensuring that people are following their practices safely?’ ‘Is it really safe for the beginner to learn yoga only through the TV channels?’
“Well
it is a serious question for the swami Ramdev Ji and others who are teaching yoga to masses to answer” said Subodh Gupta.

If seems that in India there is no governing body which understands the fragility of adverse impact of yoga exercises if done in improper way. No doubt yoga is effective for treating various diseases and a noble effort has been taken by Swami Ramdev and organizations like Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana but unless these exercises are not done in a proper system and with supervision
the whole concept of yoga teaching will become more of mockery or maybe it has already become. Perhaps in near future when the ill effect of unsafe yoga practice will come to the limelight
the media will come up with great news stating that 50 or 100 million Indians are making fun with yoga everyday in front of TV and playing with their health.

Issued in public interest by Subodh Gupta
for all those who are beginners and are learning yoga through TV
video cassette
DVD or in camps with hundreds of other people.

Improve Your Eyesight With Trataka

Monday, 17 August 2009

Eyes are the windows of the soul and you can see what a person is up to by looking into his eyes. Hence
it is important to have clean eyesight. In yoga
trataka is a technique devised by the ancient sages to improve eyesight. It is a shuddhikriya or a purification process to cleanse the eyesight and help in the silencing of the mind in concentration.

Sit with your back straight. Keep your eyes fixed on an object without winking till tears start streaming down your face. The small object can be the flame of an oil lamp
or an image or a picture or the letter ‘AUM”. This object should be placed in the line of sight at a distance of about four to six feet. You can also do this kriya without any object in front of you. Having an object is not necessary. Just stare in front of you at the wall without moving the eyeballs or eyelids. Ensure that you stare at a certain point on the wall.

Before starting this exercise
you can start off by moving the eyes without moving the head
where you roll your eyeballs up and down
sideways and from corner to corner diagonally. Initially
you can make this movement with open eyes and then repeat them with closed eyes. This will give the requisite exercise to the eye muscles. This is then followed by trataka. Trataka makes the eyes clear
improves eyes and silences the mind. Over a period of time
you will experience the silence of the mind. If you want to meditate
start with trataka to silence the mind and then go to the meditation. This way
you will reap the benefits of meditation. Since you are exercising the eye muscles
they become stronger. You can perform this kriya daily without any harmful effects.

Importance And Benefits Of Ardha Chandrasana

Sunday, 16 August 2009

Life teaches us lot of things and yoga learns lot from life. It derives its inspiration from the basic nature of life which is in various forms such as human
animals
plants
tress
earth
sun and moon. For instance this asanas other name is derived from the Moon. In English this asana would mean Half Moon Pose. The Moon from which the name is derived is an important part of our life. It touches each individual it in its own manner.

Apparently Hatha yoga talks about sun and moon which are two extreme power houses of human body. So by doing this asana it makes it more important to raise those energies and use it for the benefit of your body. This energy might be in useful for our tired bodies. The solar and lunar energy force works together for benefiting your body.

Stretching is very significant in every asana and this asana is no different. While doing Ardha Chandrasana it becomes very important to keep in mind that many may not be able to do this asana with a stiff body. You can use some accessories like yoga block to give you support
which can be used between the ground and your hand. To avoid your leg from slipping you can also use the wall as a support.

You start off this asana by performing the Utthita Trikonasana. This helps to begin your asana and provide you all the necessary benefits you can draw from this asana. By doing this asana it helps in creating a sense of a balance. Your concentration and coordination also improves greatly which is very healthy in times of urgency and emergency.

Due to this asana your fitness level increases as it stretches all the required muscles in your body to make you more agile and healthy. The joint problems which you have been suffering from ages will be cured and can be easily brought under control. By doing this asana there will be less pain and more of freedom from all the restless nights of pain. Your muscles are also strengthened as the tilt helps your asana.

Arthritis pain also improves as it helps when you keep your legs straight helping them immensely. It is also very useful for your groins and hamstring as it stretches every muscle of that part
making it more functional and more efficient. Your digestion also improves due to this pose. It helps in relieving stress and creates an easy balance in life.

I must thank Yoga if I ever do win a Grammy

Voice lessons aside
one other thing that helps with singing or public speaking will be a feeling of looseness and flexibility in the throat. While some may rely on
‘Hot tea
lemon and honey’ to achieve this
there are actually some yoga poses that help ‘loosen’ the vocal cords and with practice actually increase the flexibility of the muscles in those areas.

Now
from personal research
a specific book titled ‘Singing for the Stars’ by Seth Riggs-(the vocal coach of the who-is-who of the Music Industry)-specifies that stretching to warm up not only the vocal cords but the whole body before doing vocal warm-ups are very helpful.

That considered
I specifically incorporated those poses that I know from sensation loosen the cervical region that of course contains the throat. (As an added bonus
some of these poses loosen other body parts that come in handy for my ‘James Brown-Michael Jackson-Prince’-esque moves by the way…)

Now I will show you my choices and explain each one briefly.

1. The Sun Salutations.

This is more of a combination of poses
versus being an exclusive pose. Its ease and versatility comes in handy for warming up the entire body and increasing the blood flow. Moreover
with the deep breathing associated (and the corrective effect it does have on breathing in general)
this unique collage of indeed very simple movements will come in handy for just about warming up to do anything.

2. The Wheel Pose:

This is a backward bending pose that owing to its execution stretches the entire body immensely. When properly executed
one’s head will be turned upside down which consequently stretches the throat and increases the blood flow to the head. When
I’m doing mid to up-tempo numbers
I love executing the wheel pose to sort of get the adrenalin pumped up and I also add the spinal twists (it’s counter pose so to speak) for an even more balanced stretch that it may offer.

3. The Lion Pose:

Think “Scary Movie 1” here for a minute
remember when Marlon Wayans yells “whazup” and stretches out his tongue? Well
this pose has a similar concept in execution. Moreover
I actually read that taking its name into consideration
it is often a pose recommended for overcoming shyness
as some Yogic texts claim in executing a pose
you take up the characteristic of the object or creature it is named after. Since this is the Lion Pose
it is believed that boldness and confidence is increased. For now
let’s just stick to the immense stretching of the throat that it offers.

4. The Shoulder-Stand Sequence:

Well
this sequence includes a pose known in Yoga as Savagasana (meaning it affects all body parts). It is a simple inversion pose and when executed with its counter poses: The Bridge and the Fish Poses
they adequately loosen up the whole body. If my performance or session is in the earlier parts of the day
I may simply execute just this sequence alone (with the previously mentioned sun salutations) and be fine. The fish pose especially loosens up the chest and is often recommended for respiratory disorders such as Asthma and Bronchitis.

5. The Relaxation Pose:

The name says it all. After a session or performance
it is always best to cool down the vocal muscles as this comes in handy for extensive daily use. Perhaps no other pose comes close to relaxing not only the vocal cords but the whole body like the Relaxation Pose yoga has to offer. This simple relaxation technique is something I have incorporated into my list of essentials as a vocalist and will come in handy for interested parties as well.

In addition to these poses and since singing involves a great degree of breath control
the Breathing Exercises (aka pranayama) belonging to Yoga come in very handy
as well as do some Yogic Cleaning techniques for the body such as nasal
throat and tongue cleansing…but that’s another topic altogether.

Moreover
a yogic diet -which is akin to the Mucus-free diet of the drug-free fraternity/lifestyle-helps to ensure excess mucus within is curbed and of course fasting-an advocated practice of Yoga-augments this even more. In fact this last factor is secretly why I hardly ever run out of breath while performing folks.

Perhaps if I ever end up winning a Grammy someday (hey
you never know…)
I’ll be able to get up at the podium and acknowledge Yoga much more for helping me sing better
but for now
if your trade
passion or hobby demands an intense use of your vocal cords
you can surely benefit a lot from adding a little bit of yoga to making them work a lot better.

I almost stopped Yoga for this till I found it s still Yoga

Has anyone heard of Hindu-Push ups?
If you haven’t
boy have I got news for you. Quite simply
they work (they almost made me forego yoga till I found it was actually Yogic) and you need to check them out.

In doing research for an article I wrote a while back concerning Yoga and Calisthenics
I stumbled on a unique form of an upper body exercise known as Hindu-Push ups. Immediately
I was intrigued by the name as I knew anything “Hindu” will inevitably be from India and as such may be related to Yoga.

I clicked on the associated link and came across a description of a totally different kind of push up. Now
although I’m big into exercise and health
one exercise I never really cared too much for is doing push-ups
I just never liked them and only did them occasionally out of necessity.

However
these Hindu Push ups seemed different and the benefits associated with them actually sold me to try a few out on the spot.

Now if an exercise inexplicably
puts a smile on your face while doing it
makes you breathe deeper (which is always good) and strengthens the entire body while making sure you don’t get all stiff with zero flexibility
I think it deserves my vote as well as anyone else’s. (These by the way were all the reasons I picked up Yoga)

Well
that’s what the Hindu-Push ups do.

Here is the technique and like me
after reading this next paragraph
take a pause and try 2-3 out right quick.

-Get on all fours.
-The starting position is with legs spread wide and butt up in the air.
-From there
bend your elbows as in a regular pushup
bringing your back down in a circular arc
-Straighten your arms and end up with your chest up and your hips almost touching the ground.

When done properly and combined with deep breathing (breathing in on the way down and exhaling-looking up) Hindu pushups build amazing lung power as well as incredible upper body strength and endurance. They also improve flexibility in the shoulders and hips as well as the upper and lower back.

Now
when I personally got so intrigued by this exercise
I put 2 and 2 together and it dawned on me that

1. These are “Hindu” Push-ups right? So they must be from India.
2. The starting point is ‘Downward Facing Dog” and the ending point is ‘The Cobra Pose” and its execution is so similar to positions 6-8 of the Sun Salutations…

These factors considered
I concluded that this is simply well combined Yoga poses in motion so I can get the best of both worlds: Yoga (that I love) and Calisthenics (with its push-ups…which I can only tolerate).

That said
just like I wrote in another article
if my schedule doesn’t permit me to do all the Yoga poses I’d love to do for the day
I just simply do the 24+ rounds of sun salutations
the corpse pose and these Hindu-Push ups.

In addition I alternate this combination of exercise now and still feel like I’m pretty much doing Yoga
maybe different styles a day. The main factors are that I’m getting my exercise
I love what it is and it is working great for me.

You should try it out and see how it works for you but trust me
with at least the Sun Salutations (Yoga’s warm up) and These Hindu Push-ups (2 yoga poses in motion)
my friend you can’t go wrong for a total body workout again through Yoga.

In Friendship

How To Practice Meditation

Meditation is the most important practice for calming the mind. A calm mind can lead to a healthy
happy and successful life. It can cure diseases and speed up healing processes. We describe the simple technique below called prana-dharana. Prana in Sanskrit stands for the air that we breathe. It is the most basic act of life which starts from birth and goes on till death. But generally
we are not aware of the breath till our attention is drawn close to it. Dharana means its awareness. Prana-dharana means applying the mind to the flow of air when we breathe. The method is as described below:

Sit in a posture suitable for meditation. The common postures are Siddhasana
Padmasana and Swastikasana. But if you cannot do this
just sit cross-legged. Your back should be straight and eyes closed. Your knees should be placed well on the ground. Do not stoop your shoulders back. The whole body should be relaxed and the whole frame steady without exerting any pull or pressure on the thighs
feet
knees
spine or neck. There should be no stretch on tension along the abdominal wall. Let the abdominal wall sway gently back and forth very smoothly and effortlessly with each respiration. Facial muscles should be relaxed and mouth closed with a small gap between the two jaws such that the upper and lower teeth do not exert pressure on each other. Your tongue should touch the palate with tip touching the back of the upper front teeth. Ensure that the lips
tongue or the lower jaws do not move. Your eyeballs and eyelids should be steady and the muscles of the forehead relaxed.

Your entire posture should be comfortable
steady and relaxed. You should not feel strain on any part of the body. Now start developing the awareness of breathing. The flow of air should be uniform
slow and smooth. Do not make any effort or exercise any control. Never hold breath. Do not utter any word or see any image. This will calm your mind and help you achieve peace.

How To Perform Yogic Exercises

When you have decided to start with your yoga practice
it is imperative for you to learn how to perform a pose properly. Thus it is advisable for you to find a right teacher who will guide you in the correct manner of performing these poses. Since yogic exercises involve the static and isometric contraction of the muscles
where the muscles are held in a state of tension without causing the corresponding body part to move; it is important to note that the stretching or contraction of the muscles should not be done abruptly or suddenly. You should endeavour to reach the final pose as slowly as you can
so that there is a steady rise in the tension of the muscles. Always reach the final posture slowly through the intermediate postures. Master all these postures slowly one by one.

The movement of each body part should be done under complete control of the muscles exercised. This is achieved only after practicing for a certain period of time. There should be no jerks or violent movements. Each step should be executed easily
smoothly and gracefully. Initially
when you start learning the yoga
there is a tendency to use muscles not concerned with the specified movement. But over a period of time with due practice
you can eliminate the unproductive muscular activity. As you progress
you'll learn to use only the specified muscles for contraction or stretching while the other muscles are kept relaxed.

Avoid rushing into the final position of any posture
unless you have thoroughly mastered the intermediate stages. Always proceed as far as you comfortably can and hold this pose for some time. This will train the required muscles in a few days and thus you can get smoothness and grace. Take caution not to overwork any muscles. Do not control or restrict your breathing. If you are sick or absent from your practice for a long time
start slowly and reach the previous level only after some time. At the end of the session
you should feel fresh and relaxed. You must experience the lightness and exhilaration at the end of every session.

You can adjust the duration of various techniques according to your capacity and there should be no exhaustion or tension.

Following all these practices will ensure you get a correct yoga session.

How To Meditate With A Mantra

Friday, 14 August 2009

These days whenever a politician repeats a promise over and over again commentators say that this promise has become a “mantra” for that politician. For the journalists
the word “mantra” means a meaningless phrase that is repeated endlessly. For yogis however
a mantra is a word or collection of words
which has the power of liberating a human being from all limitations.

How can the repetition of a word or a few words have the capacity to bring about such miraculous results? It is all based on a simple psychological principle
“as you think
so you become.”

If you someone tells you “You’re stupid
” that’s of course a bad insult and will hurt you. However if you start to think “I am stupid
” and keep repeating this phrase over and over
then that is far worse. When someone tells you that you are stupid
then this is a negative outer-suggestion. When you start to think about it
then you are giving yourself
a negative auto-suggestion. If you keep thinking in a negative way
then your personal development will be harmed.

Meditation mantras have a positive meaning. They remind you that your true nature is something great: pure consciousness and boundless love. If you start to think about the best part of your being
you will begin to have more confidence in yourself and this will become apparent in your actions.

However
many people have read philosophical
spiritual or self-help books explaining these ideas
and yet they never realize these great truths in their everyday reality. It is not enough to just think about a good idea once
and then close the book. You need to think in a concentrated and systematic manner over a period of time in order to get results.

Meditation mantras have a special quality that helps in the task of concentrated
positive thinking: their very vibration has the capacity to concentrate and focus your mind. Some sounds
such as power drill breaking a pavement
can upset you greatly
while other sounds
like soothing music
can transport you to another world.

The syllables and words used in meditation mantras have been chosen according their sonic capacity
and they greatly aid the task of concentration and contemplation
as well as carrying a positive meaning.

In order to get the benefits from mantra meditation
you need to meditate regularly with a mantra that has a positive meaning and the capacity to help you concentrate. You need to do it on a regular basis
sitting silently two times a day for a period of 10 to 30 minutes.

It sounds easy
but the common experience of most people is that as you sit and try to think about one word or one phrase
your mind is quickly filled with many other thoughts; thoughts about work
financial problems
disputes with people and all kinds of other matters. When this happens
and it certainly will
then you have to bring your mind back to the mantra. Meditation is a process where you concentrate on the mantra and its meaning for as long as you can
and when you mind wanders
you bring it back.

Keep doing it
and you will attain an improved capacity to concentrate and deep inner peace.

It may still sound too good to be true
and some intellectuals scoff at the alleged power of a mantra. Once
a renowned Indian yogi came to America and delivered many lectures on this subject. In one of the lectures he was challenged by someone in the audience who said that it was not possible for a single word to deliver the results that the yogi promised. The yogi turned to the man
who was a distinguished professor and said “You fool!”

The professor turned red
and began to shout at the yogi
who calmly watched the professor unwind.

The yogi then addressed the professor and said: “Now can you understand the power of a single word? All I did was utter the word “fool” and your behavior was changed in an instant!

How to find the right Yoga teacher

Thursday, 13 August 2009

I am often asked by beginners about how to evaluate a Yoga Teacher?

The following is the “CALM check list.” These factors are basic criteria that your Yoga Instructor should meet before you continue on to a second Yoga class.

CALM gets it name from four main factors: Communication
Assist
Listen
and Modification. For the right Yoga teacher
you should be answering with a “yes” to all questions.

• Communication: Does your Yoga teacher talk to you
and other students
in a manner of mutual respect? Can you ask a question during class time?

Does your teacher show compassion for you and other students? Does your Yoga teacher take the time to lead you through a guided meditation or relaxation? Meditation and relaxation are major aspects of Yoga practice.

There are Yoga teachers who just want to get "their workout" done. Beware of Yoga teachers
who are so important
they don’t have time for you.

Some students love this air of superiority and
unfortunately
some people love abuse. If you want to learn Yoga
you need an open line of communication with your Yoga teacher.

• Assist: Does your teacher care about your form? Will your teacher give you a verbal or physical assist during your Yoga class? Are props encouraged in your Yoga classes?

Some students never have major problems with alignment and some do
but if your teacher doesn’t give verbal cues
what does that tell you?

• Listen: Does your Yoga teacher take the time to listen to your feedback? Is your teacher "in the moment" with the class?

Once in a while
there is a Yoga instructor who runs
“The-it’s-all-about-me-show.” You are not going to learn anything from this type of teaching. Beginners will be put at risk
trying to keep up with a seasoned Yoga teacher who doesn’t explain anything.

• Modification: Does your Yoga teacher allow modifications and props? If your teacher discourages props
you are in the wrong place.

Some students will need props for life depending upon their range of motion. Just because a teacher can do a posture without props
doesn’t mean every student can.

Summary: Stay away from abusive Yoga teachers
and if you are attracted to abuse
there is always professional help. Some students crave “the stern
but loving parent” types. They will push you harder
but how much pushing do you really need?

Respect is a two way street
and you deserve as much respect as your Yoga teacher does. Let common sense be your guide. You should feel good after a Yoga class
and you might even feel muscle soreness days after a vigorous class.

Make sure your Yoga teacher meets the above criteria before making a commitment.

How To Choose The Best Yoga Videos

Finding the best yoga videos is not as easy to walking down to your local video store and wandering over to the exercise aisle. Not all such videos on the market are ideal for effective home practice. In order to make sure you get the best yoga videos for your home
consider a few things you should really look for.

Easy To Understand

First of all
a quality yoga video will be easy for you to follow. You should be able to understand what is being done
how the positions are achieved
how long you should hold each one
and how often you should do it. It should also be easy to follow into each subsequent move. If you cannot understand the video
then it has failed on its most basic level.

Secondly
videos should provide not only easy to follow instructions
but also easy to understand demonstrations. You should be able to
by watching
understand the basics of achieving each pose and each transition. You should also understand
from watching
the breathing patterns and focus. If you can understand the verbal instructions
but the demonstrations are unclear then your video is no better than a book on yoga.

Next
there should be easy modifications offered in the best yoga videos. Yoga can be difficult
so beginners to it may frequently need modifications to their practice so that they can understand even that which they cannot complete. No matter what your ability level may be
you want your video to be able to apply to you. Once you buy a video
it should be of use to you at every stage as you progress further into yoga. Choose a video that will grow with you.

Teaching Qualilty

In a quality video
the yoga should be taught in a student centered manner. Though that seems like it should go without saying
you will see a number of yoga videos that are just a fancy way of showing off the instructor’s ability in yoga. Such videos do little if any good and in many cases may even be counterproductive for you. The idea of having the yoga video is to help your development
not to put you in awe of someone else’s level of flexibility or fitness.

Finally
high quality yoga videos should feature prominent and well qualified instructors. They should not only be practicing instructors
but should probably have achieved great success in their yoga education. You always want to learn from someone at as high a level as possible. By simply reading the back of the box
you will often get an overview of the teacher’s qualifications so that you can make an intelligent decision as to whether or not you want this person to help you practice yoga in your home.

Finding the best yoga videos really isn’t easy. However
when armed with the tools above
you can more accurately assess a video’s value. Look for something you understand visually and orally
that you can use at any level
and that features a successful teacher while staying student centered. When you find that you will have found the best of the best yoga videos for use at home and between private sessions or classes.

Heigh Ho Heigh Ho It s off to Yoga I go

Can we be as harmonic as those seven fictional characters on their way to mine their day away when we have a back ache? Can we obtain relief or do we have to endure a day of aches and pains while on the clock?

An article I recently viewed on the ArgusLeader.com website
indicates that back pain is the second leading reason people miss work. Truck drivers repeatedly have to deal with back pain from the continuous vibration of the spine while behind the wheel. Heavy lifting of patients and children puts nurses and parents at considerable risk. Statistics obtained from OccupationalHazards.com reveal that in the U.S.
nursing ranks as one of the top 10 occupations for work-related musculoskeletal disorders. And
an estimated 12 to 18 percent of nurses wind up leaving their profession due to chronic back pain.

Now it’s understood that the career we choose can have an adverse effect on our physical health. You can sit behind a desk all day long in air-conditioning
you can drive a tractor-trailer down Route 66 daily
or work in the hospital emergency room. Simultaneously
you are putting severe strain on your neck and back. Can we take the time to heal ourselves before our issues escalate? Can we do something to alleviate the pain if it is already present? Is there anything we can do?

What is Yoga? It’s a system of exercises practiced for thousands of years as used to promote control of the body and mind.

Why Yoga? Because it can help. It has consistently been used to cure and prevent back pain by enhancing strength and flexibility. As many practitioners can attest
Yoga can offer effective healing that's relatively free of side effects. The slow movements and gentle pressures reach deep into troubled joints. Additionally
the easy stretches in conjunction with deep breathing exercises relieve the tension that binds up muscles and tightens joints. Yoga is exercise and relaxation rolled up into one.

Who is a candidate? Each year
millions of Americans suffer from debilitating back pain. Both acute and long-term stress can lead to muscle tension and exacerbate back problems. Despite Western medicine's phenomenal advances and powerful technology
two of the most commonly prescribed solutions—painkillers and surgery—do little to address the underlying causes of pain and can potentially cause side effects. In truth
a one-size-fits-all solution is impossible given that the causes and manifestations of pain—arthritis
strained ligaments
scoliosis
and herniated disks
to name a few—vary widely.

How does Yoga assist pain management? Yoga helps reduce pain by helping the brain regulate the secretion of natural painkillers into the body. Breathing exercises commonly used in Yoga can also help reduce pain. Muscles tend to relax when you exhale
because of this lengthening your time of exhalation can help produce relaxation and reduce tension. Maintaining a certain awareness of ones own breathing helps to achieve calmer
slower respiration and assist in relaxation and pain management.

What do I do to get started? First
rule out potential serious causes of the back pain. See your primary care physician and speak to her/him of your concerns. He will know how to proceed from there to investigate the cause of your back pain. Then
also inquire as to whether or not it is safe for you to practice Yoga as part of your recovery program.

Treat the injury with extra care. When you are in a lot of pain
usually the tissues are inflamed
it’s critical that you proceed at a slow pace. If you work in an aggressive fashion in order to improve your strength or flexibility too early on
it can cause you even more pain.

Looking for an experienced teacher with substantial training and experience should be your next course of action. A Yoga therapist will assist you by creating a program that is specific to your needs and limitations
especially those pertaining to your injury and medical condition. They will observe your form and practice
and track how you respond to the exercises. He or she will gauge which elements are likely to be helpful and determine whether modifications are necessary.

Studies have shown that strict bed rest can cause you more harm than good. Go ahead and try breathing exercises and practice a gentle asana as soon as you experience pain.

Stomach crunches are often prescribed by doctors in order to prevent recurring episodes of back pain. Looking at this from a yogic perspective this is imprecise. By doing to many crunches or ab exercises you can increase the tightness in the hip flexors
and potentially making the back problems worst. With Yoga
the approach is to examine which muscles need to be strengthened and which ones need to be stretched
and finally designing a program that would work on those specific needs.

Do avoid poses that worsen or aggravate your problem. If you have a lumbar disk problem
be careful with forward bends
especially those that include some form of a twist. Also
during transitions take care
attention tends to wander. Sudden changes of position should be avoided and stepping rather than jumping should be the standard.

Lastly
make certain to consult your physician before proceeding with any exercise program
including Yoga. Also
if Yoga is approved for you be sure to receive proper training from a qualified Yoga instructor.

Hatha Yoga A Crowd Favorite

Increasingly
you may hear about your companions enrolling in Hatha classes at the local gym. In terms of pure popularity
Hatha yoga is number one in the yoga world. As a result
the poses are known well by both beginners and experts.

Hatha yoga poses are called Asanas. The Asanas are used in combination with meditation and the breathing techniques known as Pranayama. Together they work the body to improve strength and flexibility as well as overall health
which is one of the reasons it is so popular. Hatha is a hybrid of the Sanskrit words “ha” which means “sun” and the word “tha” which means the “moon.” Together
they refer to the way that Hatha’s yoga poses often bring together opposites currents in the system.

Of the eight limbs of yoga
Hatha focuses mostly on the third
which is Asana
and the fourth
which is Pranayama. These pose and posture techniques coupled with the breathing patterns are used to clear out your body’s energy channels
known as the Nadis. This
in turn
removes obstacles that could hamper other limbs helping to improve your well being.

Hatha History

Hatha has been around since 15th century India when a yogic sage
Swami Swatamarama
detailed Hatha Yoga Pradipika
one of the most important yoga texts. The original intent of this form of yoga was to help support relaxation of the body and to support the “contemplation of one reality.” Many of the classic Hatha yoga poses that were used at its inception
in fact
are still in use with it today. According to those first practitioners of Hatha
the postures can lead to the best in not only physical well being
but also the best state of mind you can possibly attain.

Your Hatha Path

Before beginning your journey into Hatha yoga
you need to be prepared just like with any other form of yoga. There are some basic tips that can help you have an easier
more effective
and safer experience as you begin this original yoga style.

First
remember to breathe normally while you are in and move between each of the poses. Your breaths should be deep and smooth. Try to feel your diaphragm opening and expanding as you switch from one posture to another. Hatha rarely
if ever
uses the shorter and harder yoga breathing
so stay smooth and deep.

Second
do not force any of the stretch positions in Hatha. Start with the easier ones and make sure you are moving easily and naturally into each pose and that you are holding it for 15 to 30 seconds. This will ensure that you get the most out of your yoga and minimize your risk of injury. Be patient with your body and do not attempt the more difficult poses until you are sure you are ready.

Finally
concentrate on your breathing. One of the big focuses in this particular yoga is the breathing which leads to much of the mental health benefits. Use the exercise to relax and become at peace with yourself in the moment. That is what Hatha yoga poses are intended to do for you.

Hatha has been in practice for over 600 years. Longevity like that is rare even in yoga
and can be a sign of success and true belief. If you are considering this form of yoga as for yourself
then remember: never strain
take the time to make sure you are ready for a given pose
and to concentrate heavily on your breathing. Following these tips will help you to attain the superior mental and physical well being that Hatha is said to provide.
